Our focus revolves around the professional utilization of background music in various settings like shops, bars, restaurants, sports clubs, and more. Background music isn’t just ambiance; it’s a crucial element enhancing customer experience, defining brand identity, and ultimately, driving revenue. Surprisingly, background music, including live performances, contributes significantly to royalties for artists, more than streaming platforms.

However, the existing system of royalty distribution poses challenges. The current model overlooks local artists and fails to accurately value music’s impact in different venues. This leads us to our primary challenges:

  • Crafting a fair distribution model of music rights based on actual usage.
  • Developing a method to accurately value music, ensuring a fair compensation system.

At Music360, we believe that fair compensation and equitable distribution of royalties are pivotal in sustaining a vibrant music ecosystem and preserving cultural heritage. By accurately recognizing the value that music brings to venues, we aim to create a more just and transparent music economy.

The MUSIC360 is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101094872.

“Our goal is to create a digital platform that collects data about the value of music played in venues for
different stakeholders”

Dr. Jaap Gordijn (VUA), principal investigator of the project

““This project aims to go beyond measuring the economic value of music. It will also pay attention to the non-monetary aspect, such as societal and therapeutical benefits, offering a 360 degrees perspective on the value of music””

Prof. Dr. María de Miguel (UPV)

Our ultimate goal extends beyond reforming the system. We’re committed to sharing insights and data with policymakers, bridging the gap between legislation and its impact on music creators and users. Our efforts aim to provide comprehensive information that sheds light on the cultural significance of music at local and global levels.

Join us on this transformative journey as we navigate challenges and pave the way for a more inclusive, transparent, and value-driven music industry.
